My Year in Practice at UMC Architects

UMC Architects understand the importance of safeguarding our future by mentoring the next generation and actively support local schools, colleges and universities providing mentoring opportunities and work experience.

This year UMC Architects has supported four year out students as they complete their placement year in practice as part of their Architecture Degree.

We caught up with Holly and Rian based in UMC Newark to find out about their experiences with UMC Architects.

Holly joined UMC Architects in August 2018 having completed her degree in Architecture BSc (Hons) at Sheffield Hallam University. Here is her story:

‘Having completed my degree, I really had to start thinking about my year-long placement with an Architectural practice. I had several interviews with architects in the midlands area that specialised in residential and commercial architecture; I was unsure of which sector of architecture I wanted to work within but knew that I wanted to gain as much experience as possible.’

‘After my interview with UMC Architects, I left feeling that this was the environment I wanted to spend my year in practice. I had little knowledge of industrial architecture but was keen to learn at a company continuing to grow and develop. When I started, I was nervous that my limited knowledge of the industrial sector would hold me back but on my first day I was put at ease and I now know that I made the right decision.’

‘As my time in practice has progressed, so has my responsibility within the team which hopefully demonstrates that I am gaining valuable experience. I am given a new challenge almost every day and so far, no day has been the same; I am constantly tested within my role to adapt and learn.’

‘I have worked closely alongside more senior architects and architectural technologists mainly on detail design drawing packs, which has enabled my technical knowledge to mature and given me a better understanding of construction; something which is invaluable and not necessarily available while in full time education at university.’

‘I have almost reached the end of my year out and am pleased to say that I will be continuing my employment at UMC Architects while progressing my part 2 and 3 qualifications at university on a part time basis; an opportunity for which I could not refuse as I have greatly enjoyed working in practice.‘

‘This September I will continue my studies and now have the added bonus of benefiting from the expertise and knowledge sharing at UMC Architects to support me; I believe this will be a real advantage and I look forward to continuing my development at UMC Architects.’

Rian joined UMC Architects in January 2019 having graduated from The University of Liverpool. Here are his thoughts on his time with UMC Architects:

‘Having graduated in June 2018, I was unsure whether to apply for jobs in Liverpool or whether to apply more locally in an around Newark. I applied to UMC Architects and got an interview where I was shown in more detail the wide range of projects they are involved with; It was at that point when I knew I wanted to work there, and thankfully I was successful.’

‘I started working as a Part I Architectural Assistant in January and have enjoyed every minute since. Everybody has been very welcoming and always willing and able to answer any questions I have; which has been great for me to settle in.’

‘I have been working in a team that does a lot of concept/feasibility designs, so I am involved in the very early stages of projects. A lot of my work is focused on the production of initial concept masterplans. Before working on a site, we do lots of site analysis research to establish whether there are any site constraints to consider; which is something I always enjoyed at university and can relate to in my work.’

‘I have also been given the opportunity to carry on working at UMC Architects after my year-out whilst studying part-time for my RIBA part 2 and RIBA part 3 at university. This is a brilliant opportunity for me to continue learning and getting the qualifications I need to become an Architect whilst still getting on-the-job experience at UMC surrounded by experienced Architects.’

We are always excited to hear from talented people at all levels who are keen to join us at UMC Architects. If you would like to join our talented and ambitious team, send your CV and samples of work to
