Amazon EMA4, Peddimore

As part of a larger strategic development of 8 buildings for which an Outline approval was received, UMC Architects were appointed by IM Properties and worked alongside Main Contractor Winvic Construction to design Amazon’s new 2.3 million sq ft distribution centre at Peddimore also known as EMA4.

The £500million state of the art automated fulfilment centre forms an integral part of Amazon’s ‘hub-and-spoke’ parcel delivery model and will ultimately employ a total of 2,000staff. The site incorporates an approved design guide which meant that the elevational treatment needed to be sensitively treated whilst reflecting the Occupier’s corporate branding. A banded solution was developed by UMC and successfully approved through the planning process. The design principle attributed to the creation of a sense of place and identity for the Peddimore development through a common architectural language of gradation. This gradation also assisted the achievement of the design objective set out in the approved design guide, allowing the warehouse element to be visually recessive, minimising the building’s overall perceived height from the surrounding area.

Finished with a BREEAM “Excellent” accreditation, the building is a 4 storey ARS (Amazon Robotics Sortable) warehouse with the roof containing a vast array of solar PV’s capable of generating 3.612 MWP.

In addition, the wider Peddimore Masterplan is characterised by a high-quality landscaped setting. It respects the Green Belt boundary to the North and East of the Site, whilst mitigating visual impact to wider surroundings. Various wellbeing and sustainability elements have been included such as historic hedgerows being instated and cycling and walking routes created.

UMC Architects were appointed by Winvic Construction to undertake the BIM Information Manager Role. i.e. model federation & clash detection with EMA4 becoming Amazons flagship scheme in respect of BIM standards and the implementation of ISO 19650.
